Peninsula Link Sculpture Commission Call for Entries
McClelland Gallery+Sculpture Park and Southern Way have announced the formation of one of the most
significant partnerships in Australia for the commissioning of public sculptures.
The call for submissions for two sculpture commissions for the inaugural Peninsula Link program of the
Southern Way McClelland Commission will open on 1 April 2011 and close on 31 May 2011, for
fabrication and delivery of works by July 2012.
The first two sculptures in an ongoing series, each to the value of $300,000, will be commissioned by
McClelland. After a two year cycle of display on the Peninsula Link freeway the works will form part of
McClelland’s sculpture collection. Funds for these two commissions have been donated by Abigroup and
RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland).
Following the initial two commissions, will be a program of biennial sculpture commissions which will
continue then over a 25 year period and will result in 14 sculptures commissioned to a total value in excess
of $4 million.
Every two years until 2037 one new sculpture will be commissioned to alternate between sites at Skye
Road and Cranbourne Road, along the new Peninsula Link freeway. Funding beyond the inaugural two
commissions will be donated by Southern Way.
An additional third sculpture will also be commissioned and installed for the opening of Peninsula Link in
early 2013. A major iconic sculpture, it will be on permanent display where EastLink joins Peninsula Link.
‘This is a truly significant outcome for sculpture in Australia,’ said Robert Lindsay, Director, McClelland
Gallery+Sculpture Park. ‘Every second year Peninsula Link will showcase a new sculptural work. I believe
this, alternating with the prestigious McClelland Sculpture Survey & Award, will bring sculpture back into the
national spotlight, which is good for art in Australia and for the very appreciative general public.’
‘Exceptional urban design outcomes with the integration of world class artworks are a key part of the
concept and critical to the successful delivery of Peninsula Link,’ said David Clements General Manager
Southern Way. ‘The partnership formed between Southern Way and McClelland Gallery+Sculpture Park will
ensure the true value of this opportunity for art work integrated within a freeway project is realised for the
local community, freeway users and the Australian sculpture community. This outcome is a real
demonstration of the value and benefit that can be achieved through the Public Private Partnership delivery
model.’
Southern Way has been awarded the contract to build Peninsula Link from Eastlink to Mt Martha.
The sculptural commissions are open to Australian and international artists. Submissions to the Peninsula
Link Southern Way McClelland Commission must be received by no later than close of business 31 May
2011. Application forms are downloadable from 1 April 2011 from www.mcclellandgallery.com
