We wish to advise you that a section of Robinsons Road in Frankston will close on 1 December 2010 for approximately nine months for essential Peninsula Link works.
The road will be closed to through traffic between Heatherhill Road and McClelland Drive (Melway Ref: 103 B11) to allow for the construction of a bridge over the new freeway.
Why is Robinsons Road closing?
We looked at ways of conducting the works with the road open but found there were more benefits to closing the road. These include safety of motorists and workers, reduced environmental impact and minimising the duration of disruption to the community as outlined below:
- As the area in which the bridge needs to be constructed is small, closing Robinsons Road is the safest option for motorists, pedestrians and construction workers.
- In some areas we are building side tracks to keep traffic moving but this was not considered the best option for Robinsons Road because it would mean removing more bushland adjacent to the road.
- Closing the road substantially reduces the time required to construct the bridge, which in turn reduces the duration of disruption on Robinsons Road.
Who do we speak to about the closure?
The decision to close Robinsons Road was taken after consultation with Frankston City Council as the manager of the roadway and key stakeholders including Bayside Christian College, public transport operators, emergency services and local sports clubs to minimise the impact of the closure on local communities.
What detours will be in place?
There will be signage in place to direct motorists and pedestrians to the detour route, which is via Golf Links Road (refer to the detour map). The Peninsula Bus Lines Route 776 service to Pearcedale and a school bus service will operate via the diversion.
Robinsons Park reserve can be accessed by motorists and pedestrians from the Golf Links Road end of Robinsons Road. Bayside Christian College and the equestrian centre can be accessed from McClelland Drive.
During these works, there will be no pedestrian access through the work site due to risks associated with construction activities and heavy machinery movements. If you have any special requirements or will experience any major disruption as a result of this changed pedestrian access, we encourage you to phone our 24 hour community line on 1300 453 035.
What is happening at Robinsons Road?
Once completed and reopened in 2011, Robinsons Road will be approximately three metres higher than its current level at the point where it passes over Peninsula Link. The freeway will be around five metres down below the current ground level.
When Peninsula Link opens in early 2013, the following will be provided for the community:
a path connection from Robinsons Road to a new 25 kilometre cycling and walking path parallel to the freeway
new traffic lights in front of Bayside Christian College to provide a safe pedestrian crossing for students.
